It‘s not really a ‘big incredible glow up story’ of how I got here… I never had dreams of becoming an esthetician or owning a business and now, I can’t imagine not being who I am today and I believe although I never had plans, the plans were already in motion FOR me.
I have a pull that is innately within to help others and make them feel better than they did walking through my door. It’s a characteristic that I believe guided me to the place that I am in today (ask me about a strangers prophecy one time in a restaurant when you see me next). I began post-secondary in 2011 for something entirely different (heading towards event planning), I had dabbled in esthetics as a teen and did not think that I would enjoy it as a career, however, I only got as far as my second semester of Marketing where I found myself withdrawing from my program and applying for the esthetics program.
In August 2013, I graduated and began working right away in a high-end spa in Stittsville. I was loving esthetics at this point but quickly realized I was not going to be able to work in a spa setting. I truly valued my clients, their time and their money, and I felt I was betraying them in the spa setting where ‘sales’ were a significant part of being an Esthetician and it just felt unnatural to me. I have every interest in helping a person choose their skin care when they ask but no desire to force it upon them. That was the day I decided to resign and knew I would pick esthetics back up in the future in the form of my own business. I had no plan, no money to do it and no home of my own to put down roots for it but I - k n e w - I would make it happen one day. I continued with manicures, pedicures and waxing over the following few years for my family and friends, just to keep up my skills until the day I could really jump back in.
Fast forward 6 jobs (some simultaneously), losing 2 of the most important women in my life way too young (my mother-in-law & my nan), buying a home, getting married, having a miscarriage and 2 incredible sons later, I made it back to a place in my life where I could really begin my esthetics career.
It wasn’t easy, and in the earlier years (2019-2023) I was a full-time stay at home mom while working my business 4-5 evenings a week (even during my pregnancy with my second son after mom’ing all day) to help grow my clientele. It was all worth it in the end as it led me to September 2023, where my boys went off to school & daycare and I would FINALLY begin my journey as a full-time Esthetician and business owner!
And because of a whole lot of love and support from my family, friends, and every single one of my clients (special shout out to my mom for funding the beginning stages of facials back in 2022/2023)… BFE is now a thriving, beautiful business that I have poured my heart and soul into.
Lastly, I’d like to dedicate a space for my beautiful mother-in-law, Susan Finch. My husband and I have been together since we were teenagers so I was blessed to have known her for 7 years before her passing in December 2015. She is a big part of the reason my business exists today and I love sharing about her role in BFE coming to fruition. She was always very supportive of me in my esthetics journey and would slip me cash here and there to help pay for my course supplies and kits in my late teens. We would have conversations about how I could have a home business one day and be able to raise my babies at home, similar to how she did in her entrepreneurial life. I truly believe she is so happy to look down and see that is exactly what I did. I am proud and honored to be her daughter-in-law and I know she has guided me here and continues to every day.
